Know The Rules

LEGAL SHOOTING HOURS:

  • One-half hour before sunrise to sunset
  • During the Special White-winged dove season – Noon to Sunset

Legal Game Birds during the Texas Dove Season:

  • Mourning Dove, White-winged Dove, White-tipped Dove
  • Unprotected Species: Eurasian Collared Dove, Rock Dove (Rock Pigeon)
  • Protected Dove: Band Tailed Pigeon (not in S TX), Inca Dove, Ground Dove (tortulera)

License Requirements:

  • All hunters must have a valid Texas hunting license
  • Texas Migratory Game Bird Stamp Endorsement is required for Dove Hunting in Texas
  • HIP Certification – Harvest Information Program- be sure to participate when you purchase your license.
  • Hunter Education Course Completion –  Be sure to have your hunter education certification on hand while you are hunting.  Check with TPWD for local hunter education certification opportunities. Free Hunter Education Course Here.

Dove Identification

There is a limit for the types of dove you can shoot in Texas by species. Check your county to learn the limits

  • White Bar on Wing
  • Large, Rounded Tail
  • Larger of the Dove
  • South Texas 
  • Brown with black spots on wing
  • Long, pointed tail
  • Smaller of the Dove
  • All of Texas

What to Bring to a Mathers Dove Hunt

Dove hunting in South Texas is a hot day. It is a great social event that can be done with your vehicle nearby, so don’t feel like you need to pack light. Comfort and safety is the priority, so learn from the experience of others; this list was developed over years of mistakes and forgetfulness!
